Opportunities to play and learn

Playing shop!

When Colin was a hatchling he often joined his Mom to do the weekly shop. Watching his mom working out how much to pay and how much change to expect. Now we usually use contactless, pay for items online and so the chance to use money and work out quantities is lost. It’s a lost opportunity to practice our maths skills.

Today’s Activity: Playing Shop

Make a board or put a price on the items from the recycling bin and play shops.

If you don’t have spare change jars at home, let kids be inventive and make their own money with values of 1p 2p 5p 10p 20p 50p or 1cent 2 cent 5 cent 10 cent 20 cent 50 cent and have them buy the different items and work out the change themselves.

How many different ways can they make up 50p or cent?

They can play both with you, a sibling or even pretend with their soft toys.

You could also play cinema. Set it up to allow the kids to buy their tickets & snacks before sitting down to watch a movie or their favourite TV episode.

The team behind Colin the tortoise and who support his creations have worked in empowering children to make good choices for themselves, learn to love learning and learn to be the best them that they can be.

We hope that through some of our suggested activities you can empower your children to learn through play!
